Solaris 10 (x86) under VmWare

I have this question often when talking about VMware. IS Solaris 10 available under VMware. Yes Solaris 10 (X86) is feasible under VMware, though it is not too spread yet.

If you desire to Install Solaris 10 (X86) on VMware all you need is:

* VMware (Any Edition)

* 4 images of Solaris 10 (x86) CDs (Total: ~ 1.4 GB)

* ~ 4 hours time (installation)

* ~ 4GB HD space on the host system in a small installation

* Good Unix knowledge

* VMware Virtual Machine settings: 256MB RAM, virtual HD = 8GB, networking = Bridge

  1. Does anyone know the performance of Solaris 10 on vSphere 4 ? Especially for memory intensive java applications.

  2. Hi,

    I’ve installed Solaris 10 as guest in Vmware in Windows Vista as host, how could I share folders from Solaris in Vista?

    Thanks a lot!

  3. Hi Marcos,

    You should look into setting up Samba on Solaris 10. That should give you the ability to create shared folders from Solaris that are accessible just as any other windows share folder in Vista.

    I hope that help,

  4. Hi there!

    I just installed Solaris 10 on VMware. Its running on a 2k3 server. Another machine on the network pings it non stop (ping -t), and i noticed that its showing “Request timed out” ever so often…

    I then created another Solaris slice (complete installation from scratch), and it shows the same problem.

    This does not happen to my Linux VMs / Win 2k3/8 VMs.

    Any idea?
    Thank!

  5. Hi Dan,

    I am very sorry as I was away from my blog for a while due to being stuck at few huge projects at work.

    I understand that you have already resolved the issue by reinstalling it. If you still have any problem with it please post back.

  6. HI Team,

    I am tying to install Solaris 10 on Vmware 7 on my dell N4050 Laptop( HDD=500GB,RAM=4GB,CPU=I3).

    But when its rebooting after installation process its not going to OS its restarting continiouslly. After splash screen its again restarting and restarting….

  7. Hi Sharad,

    I believe your machine has some boot info with it from an installation that failed or something. That is normally the reason a VM keep restarting without trying to load the software. You can create a new VM and try to install in it.
    or you can just force VM to enter BIOS Setup mode on next boot up, & change the first boot option to be the cd you want to install from.

    Hope this help,
